Obtaining an SSH client

Free SSH clients are listed at http://www.freessh.org/ At this writing, this site does not seem to list any free Macintosh clients. However, MacOS X is equipped with a command-line SSH client, which can be launched from within the Terminal application. If you're using ``classic'' MacOS, you can obtain an SSH client from http://www.macssh.com.

Here are specific directions for installing SSH Secure Shell Client, which is free for personal or educational use, and includes a secure ftp client for file transfer. (However, at some 6.5 MB, it is a large file to download. Some of the other clients at the FreeSSH site are considerably smaller, but they have fewer features.)

If your Internet connection is so slow that the size of the download is prohibitive for you, ask one of the computer science faculty for a CD that you can borrow, which contains the SSH Client installation package.
