Citation style guidelines

You can find guides for citation style at the following URL's:

• Suggested URL citation style

• Modern Language Association (Click on MLA STYLE)

• American Psychological Association

I do not require that you follow these exact styles, but you should follow some reasonable scholarly style that retains the same amount of information about the sources. Remember that citations are not merely intended to give credit where credit is due: they also have the important function of allowing the reader of your paper to follow up and find more details on topics of interest. Therefore a citation must contain enough information to allow the original article to be located.

These links provide some starting points to search for information about ethics and law in cyberspace. They have been checked recently for validity. Most of them were found by using the Yahoo search engine, looking for the keywords ``cyberspace ethics.'' The student is welcome to do the same.

• A good introductory discussion of the ethical and other aspects of concealing one's identity on the internet can be found in M. E. Kabay, Anonymity and Pseudonymity. More links on the same subject are provided at the AAAS project on Anonymous Communications on the Internet.

• The risks of computerization in everyday life are discussed at the SRI Risks Forum newsgroup comp.risks The home page for this forum is located at SRI Computer Science Laboratory. Past issues can be browsed and searched at The Risks Digest.

• The dangers from artificial intelligence and other modern technologies are discussed in an article by Bill Joy in the April 2000 online issue of Wired Magazine.

• ``Spam'' is unsolicited e-mail, usually commercial in nature, similar to junk mail. It is an unwanted intrusion and can cause losses due to filling up of one's mailbox or triggering of smut filters. Some information about spam and countermeasures that can be taken against it can be found at:
