CISC 1100: Homework

Here is a list of homework. Since I won't know in advance how much material we'll cover on a given day, I generally determine the homework assignments after each class session is completed.

For a multi-part problem: If I don't specify parts, then do all parts of the problem. If I do specify parts (e.g., 1.6.1ade), only do the parts indicated.

The dates given are the dates the the homework was assigned. Unless told otherwise, all homework is due at the next class session.

• Tue 31 May:

  • Start part 1 of website project.
• Wed 1 June:
  • pg. 34ff.: 1.6.4ae, 1.6.5eh, 1.6.6c, 1.6.10, 1.6.14, 1.6.16acf
  • Finish part 1 of website project. (Feel free to start part 2.)
• Thu 2 June:
  • pg. 72ff.: 2.5.1bde, 2.5.3bf, 2.5.5ac
• Tue 7 June:
  • pg. 115ff.: 3.3.1, 3.3.2, 3.3.5abc, 3.3.6ace
    Treat "or" as the inclusive or, rather than the exclusive or. Treat "evil" as meaning "not good".
  • Work on part 2 of website project.
  • If you're done with part 2 of the website project, start work on part 3 of website project.
• Wed 8 June:
  • Finish the website project (if you haven't already done so).
  • pg. 115ff.: 3.3.7ace, 3.3.8 (only for statements a, c, and e in problem 3.3.7), 3.3.12, 3.3.14, 3.3.17
  • pg. 145ff.: 4.4.1, 4.4.2, 4.4.3ac, 4.4.5a. Note that for 4.4.3 and 4.4.5, you're being asked to write out an infinite relation as a set of ordered pairs; for these problems, you should write down enough pairs to show me that you understand the general idea of what's going on.
• Thu 9 June:
  • Study for the midterm exam. I strongly suggest taking the practice midterm exam, and then comparing your results with the solutions.
  • Really finish website project.
  • Start Part 1 of the Alice project.
• Tue 14 June:

  • If you haven't already done so, finish Part 1 of the Alice project.
  • If you haven't already done so, start Part 2 of the Alice project.
• Wed 15 June:
  • pg. 191ff: 5.9.4, 5.9.6, 5.9.7ab, 5.9.11
  • Finish Part 2 of the Alice project.
  • Start Part 3 of the Alice project.
• Thu 16 June:
  • pg. 191ff: 5.9.14bcdef (for functions f₃, g, h, and r).
  • pg. 191ff: 5.9.18
  • pg. 219ff.: 6.4.1, 6.4.3, 6.4.4, 6.4.5, 6.4.6, 6.4.7
    Hint:For 6.4.4 and 6.4.5, make a table of all possible outcomes of rolling a pair of dice; it will have 6 rows and 6 columns.
  • Continue working on Part 3 of the Alice project.
• Tue 21 June:
  • pg. 219ff.: 6.4.11, 6.4.12, 6.4.13, 6.4.17
    Note that the straightforward solution to 6.4.13 involves the calculation of several binomial coefficients. There's a somewhat more subtle solution that involves very little calculation at all.
  • pg. 246ff.: 7.7.2, 7.7.5, 7.7.9
  • Continue working on Part 3 of the Alice project. If you're done with that, go on to Part 4.
• Wed 22 June:
  • pg. 246ff: 7.7.7, 7.7.10, 7.7.12a, 7.7.14dacbe, 7.7.16
    . Note that you are to do all of Problem 7.7.14, but in the specified order. That's because the answer to part d can be used to find the to part a, and so forth.
  • Finish part 3 of the Alice project if you haven't already.
  • Start (or continue) working on Part 4 of the Alice project.
• Thu 23 June:
  • 7.7.18, 7.7.22, 7.7.23
  • Continue with Part 4 of the Alice project.
• Tue 28 June:
  • 9.6.1a, 9.6.2a, 9.6.3a, 9.6.5, 9.6.8a
  • Continue with Part 4 of the Alice project.
• Wed 29 June:
  • Finish Part 4 of the Alice project.
  • Study for final exam. I strongly suggest taking the practice final exam, and then comparing your results with the solutions.
